Aster - Cephac SA

Aster - Cephac, located in Paris, France is a world-leading international multi-service Life Science Contract Research Organisation ("CRO") providing Clinical Pharmacology (Phase I & II studies), Bio-analysis, Bio-statistic, Medical-writing and Cosmetic Product Testing services to the worlds pharmaceutical industries, cosmetic and other personal care companies. Aster - Cephac employs 350 scientists, researchers and technicians. In January 2006, Aster – Cephac joined the SGS group, as part of their Life Sciences division. Prior to this, David Kauffmann held the position of chairman of the management board and was actively involved in this merger. 

 

Gacell Laboratories AB
In February 1992, Gacell Laboratories, a drug delivery company, was acquired from Phamacia AB in Sweden. Gacell had developed a patented oral, tablet and pellet, drug delivery technology based on a membrane coating principle called Multipor. Revenues grew from SEK22 million in 1991 to SEK40 million in 1993. In August 1993, Gacell merged with Ethical Holdings plc, a NASDAQ listed drug delivery company. During the holding period, Hans Blomberg held the position of acting CEO at Gacell Laboratories.  

 

Bio-Research Laboratories Ltd
Bio-Research Laboratories Ltd, located just outside Montreal, Quebec, is a privately-held contract research organisation providing pre-clinical and bio-analytical research services to the drug, bio-technology, medical device and chemical industries. In April 1992, CAI acquired a 40% equity interest in Bio-Research, with Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board and Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec each owning 30% of the common equity. Sales grew from C$26 million in 1992 to C$36 million in 1995, and Net Income increased from a loss of C$1.5 million in LTM prior to the investment to a profit of C$5.1 million in 1995. In May 1996, the Company merged with Clintrials, a NASDAQ listed company. As a founding partner of CAI, David Kauffmann worked actively with the company's management and Board of Directors from 1992 to 1996.  

 


Bioanalytical Systems INC. (BASI)
Formerly PharmaKinetics Laboratories Inc.

PharmaKinetics Laboratories Inc. was a US-based CRO. The company provided pharmacology and bio-analytical services to the drug industry, with particular focus on the generic drug sector. PharmaKinetics employed 150 employees and realised revenues of approximately US$28 million in 2000. In 1998, David Kauffmann participated in securing an increase in the company's share capital and served as a board member from 1998 to 1999. In 2002, Pharmakinetics merged with BASI, a leading drug development firm with laboratories in the US and the UK.
