Title: New Gigabit Ethernet solution from Transmode doubles traffic capacity
and lowers operational cost - Highly cost effective IP backhaul networks
enabled by new Double Dual GbE Transponder
Transmode
today introduced a new plug-in unit for its TM-Series (formerly Mentis)
platform, the Double Dual Gigabit Ethernet Transponder. This Small Form-factor
Pluggable based card allows the deployment of small-footprint, fully-integrated
low-cost Metro WDM nodes enabling highly economical backhaul of Gigabit
Ethernet traffic generated by DSL and Cable-based broadband access systems.
The card supports four Gigabit Ethernet signals electrically multiplexed
into two wavelengths, with optional 1+1 protection on each wavelength.
The Double Dual GbE Transponder can be installed in any TM-Series chassis,
including the 1 RU (Rack Unit) TM-101 subrack, creating a compact fully
integrated WDM node with add/drop optical filters, multiple GigE client
signals, protection and in band management capabilities. With a selling
price of well under $10,000, this solution is optimized to address the
fast growing IP-traffic backhaul market.
"The card is ideally suited for "Triple-play" applications,
where operators need high bandwidth to transfer TV, telephony and Internet
services over an IP network, at very low cost. The response from our customers
regarding this unit is very positive and we expect it to become a high
volume product within our portfolio", said Magnus Öberg, Transmode's
Chief Technology Officer.
The Double Dual GbE Transponder supports multiple built in functions,
each controlled by software developed by Transmode:
 |
Up
to 4x GbE on two wavelengths, in either point-to-point or ring configurations. |
 |
Built-in
line protection, increasing the network capacity to two working
and two protection wavelengths, providing a low cost and highly
reliable solution for traffic links with high demands of availability. |
 |
In-band
management channel, removing the need for external network management
connections. |
 |
Built-in
repeater function, allowing cascaded nodes to extend system reach
to multiple spans, with each span up to 100 km. |
 |
Expansive
Performance Monitoring and GbE utilization monitoring, allowing
operators the opportunity to monitor and bill on a capacity usage
level. |
By providing this extensive functionality with the flexibility and operational
expenditure (OPEX) advantages of Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optics
in a compact transponder unit, Transmode is providing network operators
with unprecedented network design options. This unit is already proving
very popular with Transmode's existing customer base and has been a key
factor in some of Transmode's recent customer wins, including Telenor,
the Tier 1 Norwegian PTT and Global Service Provider.
About
Transmode:
Transmode is a Pioneer in Optical Networking. Innovations such intelligent
WDM (iWDM), which dramatically lowers operational cost, and unamplified
DWDM, which reduces network CAPEX and complexity, have contributed to
success at a global level, with a customer base of more than 100 network
operators, service providers, enterprises and public institutions across
Europe, the Americas and Asia.
Transmode is the only company with the full spectrum of Optical Networking
solutions based on WDM, designed to cater for the needs of Network Operators
and Enterprises alike without compromising on functionality or cost-efficiency.
Transmode's product portfolio addresses Optical Networking requirements
from regional networks, through metro core and access networks, all the
way down to the customer premises.
