Transmode Systems announces enhanced version of System 1100

Transmode Systems AB, a leading supplier of transmission equipment for fibre optic networks, today announced from CeBIT in Hanover a new version of its market-leading CWDM platform, the System 1100. The main feature of this release is Transmode's new CWDM Amplifier, which extends the reach of the System 1100 platform to up to 120 km without the need for repeaters.

Transmode was first to announce successful field trials of amplified CWDM systems last year. For this product release, the amplifier has been fully productised as a component of the System 1100 platform and will begin shipping in Q2 2003.

"We have already had significant interest in this new release as it allows our Service Provider customers to increase their addressable market whilst maintaining cost leadership, and our Enterprise customers to deploy new longer-distance applications", says Michael Crossey, VP of Marketing at Transmode. "The new CWDM amplifier further enhances one of the key differentiating features of our solution, that is the inherent modularity of the platform. This modularity allows customers to adopt a true pay-as-you-grow approach to network deployment, and to tailor the system to the most cost-effective configuration possible for their specific application."

The modularity of System 1100 is realized in two "dimensions": system capacity and system reach. In the capacity dimension, the system architecture allows for the lowest-possible "first-in" cost when deploying the first CWDM channel. Further channels can then be deployed, one at a time, as capacity requirements increase.

In the reach dimension, Transmode offers PIN-based transponders for short reach, APD-based transponders for medium reach and amplified CWDM systems for long reach. The system can be tailored to fit the various link spans encountered throughout a network as well as the various bandwidth requirements found on different stretches of the network.

At CeBIT in Hanover and OFC in Atlanta, Transmode Systems and OFS will continue to demonstrate the benefits that Transmode's CWDM system and OFS's AllWave fibre brings to WDM networking. At booth these exhibitions, Transmode's System 1100 will be running live over OFS's AllWave fibre in the OFS booth.
