Transmode Systems AB and Vtesse Networks have completed Trial of amplified CWDM system using amplifiers from Genoa

Transmode Systems AB, a pioneer of CWDM technology, and the British carrier Vtesse Networks have successfully performed a field trial of an amplified CWDM system over 200 Kms. The trial involved linear optical amplifiers (LOAs) from Genoa and is the first of its kind.

"By working very closely with our customers and component suppliers, we're, again, first to market with new innovations like this amplified CWDM system", says Johan Sandell, VP R&D at Transmode. "At Transmode, everything we do satisfies the requirement of customers in a cost effective manner. A scalable and amplified CWDM solution will open up new markets for Transmode and our partners".

In this trial, 4 CWDM channels of Gigabit Ethernet were transmitted over 125 km of fibre by using one LOA as booster. By adding an additional LOA, the transmission reach could be increased to 200 km.

"Vtesse Networks is implementing a modern, high capacity, low cost data transmission network in the UK. For many of our transmission requirements, including mesh and point-to-point systems, CWDM offers the best balance between performance and cost-effectiveness", says Alan Mitchell, Chief Technical Officer at Vtesse. "The inclusion of Genoa LOAs into this CWDM transmission platform allows us to extend span lengths to 100km and beyond without needing to resort to much more expensive DWDM equipment".

With no sacrifice of performance, amplified CWDM systems allow carriers like Vtesse to reduce capital and maintenance costs by using less equipment and, even more significant, reduce their civil engineering costs.

"CWDM has the potential to change the cost structure of the last mile", says Gerlas van den Hoven of Genoa. "Transmode is taking advantage of the broadband nature and disruptive economics of LOA to expand the capability of this emerging network solution."
